Michigan Cannabis Law in Plain English: What Adults 21+ Can and Can’t Do
Michigan has allowed adult-use cannabis since 2018. Here are the house rules the law sets — buying, possessing, growing, driving and more.

Michigan voters legalized adult-use cannabis in 2018, and licensed stores started selling it in December 2019. The law gives adults 21 and older real freedom — with a few firm house rules. Here’s the plain-English version. (It’s a guide, not legal advice.)
Buying
- You must be 21+ with a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID.
- Licensed retailers can sell you up to 2.5 ounces per day, no more than 15 grams of it concentrate.
- Buy from licensed stores only — that’s where products are tracked and lab-tested.
Possessing
- Out and about, adults can carry up to 2.5 ounces, with no more than 15 grams of concentrate.
- At home you can keep up to 10 ounces; anything over 2.5 ounces must be secured in a locked container.
- You can give up to 2.5 ounces to another adult 21+ — as long as nothing is sold, traded or bartered for it.
Growing
Adults may grow up to 12 plants per household, out of public view and secured from access by others. What you harvest counts toward the at-home limits.
Where you can’t consume
- In public places — sidewalks, parks, parking lots and the like.
- In a vehicle: no smoking in the passenger area on a public road, and no consuming while you’re driving or in control of the vehicle.
- Anywhere the property owner prohibits it, including many rentals and workplaces.
Driving
Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, just like driving drunk. Keep products sealed and out of reach while you’re on the road, and plan a sober ride if you’ve consumed.
Leaving the state
Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, and taking it across a state line is illegal — even into another state where it’s legal. Buy it here, enjoy it here.
Work and housing
Legal doesn’t mean protected everywhere: employers can keep drug-free workplace policies, and landlords can prohibit smoking or growing on their property.
21+, 2.5 ounces out and about, 10 ounces at home, 12 plants — and never in public, in a car or behind the wheel.
