How to Read a Cannabis Label: THC, CBD, Terpenes and Test Results
The label on every legal cannabis product tells you what’s inside and how strong it is — if you know where to look.

Every product on a licensed shelf has been lab-tested, and the label is where those results live. Knowing how to read it is the fastest way to buy exactly what you want — and nothing you don’t.
THC: the headline number
For flower and pre-rolls, potency is listed as a percentage by weight. You’ll often see both THC and THCa, or a single total THC figure. THCa is the raw, non-intoxicating form in the plant; heat turns it into THC when you smoke or vape. Total THC accounts for that conversion, so it’s the number to compare between products.
Edibles, tinctures and drinks list THC in milligrams — per serving and per package. Always check both.
CBD and ratios
CBD doesn’t produce a high on its own, and many people find it softens THC’s edges. Products are often described by ratio: 1:1 means equal parts CBD and THC; 20:1 means mostly CBD with a trace of THC.
Terpenes
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give each strain its smell and flavor. Myrcene (earthy), limonene (citrus), caryophyllene (peppery), pinene (pine) and linalool (floral) are the big five. Many labels list the top few — if you loved a strain, its terpenes are a good clue to what you’ll like next.
The fine print
- Batch number and test date — tie the product to its lab result.
- Packaged or harvest date — fresher flower keeps more of its aroma.
- Net weight — grams for flower and concentrates.
- Warnings — required on every package: 21+ only, keep away from children, don’t drive under the influence.
Bigger isn’t always better
A high THC number doesn’t guarantee a better experience. Terpenes, freshness and your own tolerance matter as much as the percentage. If you’re newer, a moderate-potency product usually plays better than the strongest thing on the menu.
Compare total THC, check the serving size, and let the terpenes point you toward flavors you already like.
